# BQ2578 - A Koto Period Katana by Nio Kiyomitsu in Shingunto Koshirae - $ 6600.00

Click here for fax-in order form

A fine large robust katana that appears to be by Nio Kiyomitsu, ca. 1500. The nakago is ubu with one ana, signed, "Kiyomitsu". A very handsome Koto blade. The hamon is highly controlled medium midare-suguha and small gunome with extensive ari-nei. The kissaki is slightly extended with a fine Kaen boshi. The fine two-piece silver habaki fits the blade perfectly. The untouched original shingunto koshirae is outstanding with added silver family mon, Hiki -- double bars, as used by many Samurai families including the Hosokawa, on the kashira. Includes an early sukashi tsuba and a total of eight graduated seppa. The blade is in 95% polish with a couple of tiny nail-catcher edge nicks and very minor surface scratches. This katana was surrendered to James McDonough by a high ranking Japanese officer at the end of WWII. McDonough served on General McArthur's staff as a language specialist. He lived in Japan and China for several years and later was Vice President of Seagram's. Biographical information will be included with sale. The mounts show minor period use and wear. 71.35cm. blade nagasa.
