# AH31 - A Rare Indian Fakir's Crutch with Concealed Spike, ca. 17th/18th Century - $ 2450.00

Click here for fax-in order form

A fine and rare Indian fakir's or mendicant's crutch. The body consisting of a hand forged iron twist ribbed tube with flared throat, mushroom-shaped foot and gold koftgari details. The rest elegantly contoured with downturned finials, one replaced in period. The neck faceted and threaded to screw into the haft, which conceals a long spike of square section. Mendicants were prohibited by the tenets of their religion from carrying weapons, so they instead carried crutches to rest their arm upon when sitting that were also heavy enough to use as a mace or contained a concealed spike, as in this example. 49 cm overall with 27 cm spike. An interesting and unusual item.
