A 19th century Sudanese kaskara of unusually fine quality from the region of Darfur, in its original varanus (monitor) lizard skin scabbard still retaining the original embossed leather hanging strap. Silver grip embossed with traditional designs, bearing the original tassel with silver bangles. The graven pommel also of silver with domed, fluted capstan . The finely forged cruciform quillons of diamond section display a lovely aesthetic. Plain, unmarked double-edged blade with short central fuller. Fine condition overall, some spotting to blade (should clean well), some losses to the scabbard stitching, small loss to the coiled silver border at the pommel end of the grip. The British Museum holds a similar example, probably from the same workshop, attributed to Nasir Mohamed, the Funj sultan from AD 1762 to 1769. To view that example, click here. Blade 86.7 cm., overall in scabbard abt. 105.5 cm.
