A Fine Spanish Cup-hilt Rapier by Francisco Ruiz -- price reduced!! - $
6500.00
A fine original Spanish cup-hilt rapier, ca. mid-17th century, by Francisco Ruiz of Toledo and so marked in the fullers. This is likely a reference to Francisco Ruiz the Younger, recognized working in Toledo during the first half of the 17th century, or possibly the Elder, noted as early as 1617. The hilt is consistent with Norman's types 100/101, with moderately deep cup with rolled edge and a band of engraved decoration in a flower and vine motif beneath the lip. Long quillons and knucklebow of round section with flared tips, pas d'anes providing a mounting structure for the cup, which is retained by two screws; wire-bound grip of square section with square ferrules and turned pommel of flattened spherical form with baluster button. Very long blade of square section, tapering to a needle point. Within the cup exists a finely pierced and decorated guardapolvo. Fine condition, pommel peen appears undisturbed, no apparent restorations or repairs; a lovely sword throughout and worthy of any collection. Blade 97.5 cm, 115 cm overall.
