A German Cup-hilt Rapier, ca. 17th Century - $
6750.00
A fine German cup-hilt rapier with beautifully chiselled cup with unrolled lip and without guardapolvo, comprising four ovate panels, each containing a crowned two-headed bird, and with a band of vegetal decor beneath the rim. The fine pommel deeply chiseled in an acanthus leaf design with starbursts on either side, punched background and carved baluster button. The grip, of hexagonal section, swollen at the center, likely retains the original binding. The elegant knucklebow and quillons swell gently, terminating in ball finials. Long, slender blade of square section with deep, short fullers containing a now illegible inscription and tapering to a fine needle point. Blade 104.2 cm., overall 125 cm.
