# 1001-20 - A Fine French Smallsword, ca. 1780 - $ 3750.00

A fine 18th century French military smallsword with blade of hollow-ground triangular section. Gilded iron hilt with functional pas d'anes and bilobate shell guard, the entire hilt decorated in high relief with panoplies of arms, military accoutrements and floral motifs with a rococo flavor. The blade etched with sunburst and arabesques, incorporating a panel with a Paris retailer's inscription. The grip well-wrapped in alternating twisted iron wire and silver gilt banding, terminated with turks' heads. Fine condition; light wear to gilding, the blade very crisp with a few scattered pits and spotting. A fine weapon. Overall 95.5 cm., blade 79.2 cm.
