French Cut-steel Hilted Smallsword, ca. 1760 - $

A good mid-18th century French cut-steel hilted smallsword, retaining about 2/3 of the original parchment scabbard with two steel mounts. Fine hollow-ground blade of triangular section, etched with panoplies of arms and arabesques. Simple ovate disk-type guard with scalloped edge. Rudimentary, non-functional pas d'anes, multi-faceted ovate pommel with turned baluster button and base. Finely wrapped grip, swollen at the center, with alternating bands of copper and iron wire, terminated with copper turks' heads. A light and elegant weapon with slightly offset hilt as was the style. Overall very fine condition; the scabbard worn and missing the lower third, blade with minor spotting with much original bright polish, retaining the red felt washer. disk-guard slightly loose. Ex Prince of Liechtenstein collection. Blade 82.3 cm., overall 98 cm.
