A Fine Spanish or South American Bilobate Cup-hilted Rapier, ca. 1700 - $
5850.00
A fine example of a Spanish rapier, ca. 1700. Bilobate shell guard retained to the arms by two screws, pierced along the borders; the outer shell finely chiseled in relief in a motif featuring addorsed lions flanking a two-headed eagle and the inner with crown amidst flora. Delicate hilt with straight quillons and curved knucklebow, all twisted at the outermost ends and finely filed at the tips. The pommel a flattened sphere with lovely helically filed surface. Shield-shaped ecussons with flutes converging at the lower tip. Original fine wire-bound grip with turks' heads. Slender, needle-sharp blade of flattened diamond section with deep fullers inscribed "EN SOLINGEN." For a similar example see "European Swords and Daggers in the Tower of London, Plate 42, #d. A lovely original and elegant weapon throughout, with fine patina. Blade 96.2 cm., approx. 111.13 cm. overall.
