Carved figure from Mali/Ivory Coast Africa. This elegant and well-carved female figure on a cylindrical base comes from the Senufo people. Figures of this type are known as rhythm-pounders, or "pombibele”, and were commissioned by the male "Poro Society" or the female "Tykpa(Tykepa) Society," both of which were concerned with initiations, funerals and social control. Though these Pombibele are associated with loud booming noises when groups of them are struck on the hard ground, many smaller examples were carried, and not used to make sounds. Very good condition with fine age patina and minor cracks that do not detract from its beauty. 49.5 cm. tall.
