A U.S. Militia Staff Officer's Sword, ca. 1840-1860 - $
2200.00
A good U.S. militia staff officer's sword, ca. 1840-1860, mounted in gilded brass, with plumed helmet pommel and two chains connecting the pommel to the crossguard. The crossguard with acorn finials and geometric decoration in relief. Bone grip carved and incised with lines and alluvial fan pattern. Good, bright blade etched with floral and military motifs, also etched with maker's inscription in a banner, "W.H. HORSTMANN & SONS, PHILADELPHIA". Gilded brass scabbard with three loose rings (two opposed) and interesting lobed and detailed frog stud. VG overall, no chips to grip, scabbard undented and retaining a good portion of the original gilt. Blade with minor oxidized areas. A fine example.
