# BQ1490 - Outstanding Gendai Naval Tachi by Kunimori - $ 6600.00

Kunimori was one of the most highly rated makers of the period. He also went by the art name “Yasuhiro” while working at the Yasukuni shrine. He is rated as high to superior grade with a 1.8 million Yen value. See Slough's book "An Oshigata Book of Modern Japanese Swordsmiths 1868-1945" for much information on this important smith. The elegantly shaped blade is in a cleaned and lightly rusted state with one small chip but no kizu. It is bent but can be corrected by a professional polisher during restoration. The hamon is hard to discern but appears to be medium suguha with undulations. It has an excellent nakago with lots of kanji that state that this sword was made by Miyaguchi Kunimori living in Tokyo. The kanji also state that the sword was custom made for Saito to carry and is dated a lucky day in the 10th month of Showa 18, 1943. The habaki is solid silver and is engraved Saito on one side and carries the Saito family mon of the reverse. The Yasukuni shrine book contains an illustration of a similar habaki. This sword can probably be traced to the particular naval officer who owned it. The mounts are all original to the sword and are of very high quality. The tsuka is of very rare lacquered boa skin. The saya has a slightly textured black lacquer finish. This is a once-in-a-lifetime Gendai sword that will be a masterpiece when polished. 94.6 cm. overall, with 63.3 cm. blade nagasa.
